Musing Mondays: What's New?

Here's this week's Musing Mondays hosted by Rebecca at Just One More Page. Join in or read other answers by clicking here.

What is your policy when it comes to new authors? Do you feel comfortable purchasing a book or do you prefer to borrow new authors from the library? How often do you 'try out' a new author?

I generally jump right in when it comes to new authors. I love discovering new writers. And I have no problem purchasing a book by an author I've never heard of before.

I try out new authors every month. How many depends on my reading kick at the time. Once in a while (like this year), I work my way straight through a series. But my usual situation is quite the opposite: I enjoy trying new authors so much that I neglect series or novelists I am familiar with just for the thrill of trying something different!

I've have read five new authors since January 1. What about you? How many new authors have you read this year?

I've read a few new authors (one that is fresh on the sene and a few that are firsts for me). Catherine Delors(Mistress of the Revolution, Robin Maxwell (Signora da Vinci)and Helen Hollick (The Kingmaking). All of the were fantastic and now I must collect everything they've written!!

It's so exciting to find a new author...opens up a whole new set of adventures!!

I've found that since I started blogging, new authors (either new to me or new new) are about all I read! I also feel like I've been neglecting my tried and true favorites.

Every book I have read so far this year has been from a different author. I buy more by interest in the story rather than the author.

I love new authors. I feel like I read mostly new authors.

I love trying new authors and will buy books by an author I haven't heard of before if the book interests me. Like you, I have neglected authors I want to return to because I'm so busy trying new authors.

I think most, if not all, of the books I've read so far this year were by new to me authors.

HI!
I seem to have been reading quite a few new authors this year! And I have enjoyed them all very much! Thanks for stopping by my place. Have a great day!!

I have read five new this year which is actually many for me (and I have two on my shelf to be read quite soon). I begin to see the results of blogging & reading other people´s reviews - so you people out there actually do influence my rather set reading habits ;)

I share your enthusiasm and willingness to try new authors -- I've selected books to read just because they had an interesting cover. And a short blurb will usually be enough to get me to try something -- more often than not, I am not disappointed.

Now that I've checked...out of the 35 books I've read so far this year, 20 have been by new-to-me authors. It would be even worse if Denis hadn't been breathing down my neck for my Deborah Crombies!

caite 3/9/09, 1:51 PM

gee...35 books this year so far???

as to the question, one good thing about 'ignoring' favorite authors to read 'new' ones are that the books of the favs will still be there when you get back to them someday.

I tend to look more at story lines when selecting books, so I end up reading a lot of new to me authors. And when I find one I like, it's always a joy because it means more books that I know I'll enjoy.

All but two of the books I've read so far this year are from new authors. I am also getting a lot of recommendations from people online whether through blogs or message boards and it is keeping my reading pile stocked high with tons of authors that are new to me.

I love new authors, too. One of the great things about blogging is that it's helped me discover lots of new writers.

Nise' 3/9/09, 4:18 PM

I love to discover new authors. So far this year, I have read 27 new authors. I have felt that I have neglected some of my old favorites!

Beth F 3/9/09, 6:02 PM

Amy: you are one of my prime sources for new authors and new books!

Social Frog: I go through stages like that. So far this year, I read the Bone series, so that was 9 books by the same author!

Sandy, Wendy (Lit. Lion), & Nise': I sometimes miss my old favorites!

Nicole, Sherrie, Jenners, Belle:: It is exciting to try new authors.

Dorte and Kathy (Bermuda): Absolutely! Blogging has introduced to me new horizons.

Cathy: And then don't you want to return to your mystery series. I'm falling farther and farther behind!

Caite: Great point. Yes, I should stop fretting and return to favorites when I'm ready.

Kim 3/9/09, 8:14 PM

I love new authors- I have read 6 new ones out of 9 books completed so far this year! I have found most of these new authors because of the blogs I read. :) (yours included!)

I definitely don't mind reading books by new authors! As long as they hold my interest, that is it! :D

Erika Powell 3/10/09, 2:17 AM

i don't know the exact number but it is a lot. i love discovering new authors and when i love one it feels like such an accomplishment

Rebecca Johnson 3/10/09, 7:06 AM

I have that problem too, I read the first 1-2 books in a series then get distracted by something new and shiny. I still want to read the rest of the series, but before I know it, I've read five other books.

Beth F 3/10/09, 7:29 AM

Kim: I found a ton new authors since I started blogging.

Melody: True, some new authors are better than others.

Erika: It is a great feeling to find a new author, especially when it's one you discovered on your own in the store or library.

Rebecca: I sooooo relate.

I love new authors, I've read at least 3 this year. One of my favorites is Andrew Davidson, but I'm new groupie for Muriel Barbery, I'll read her grocery lists.

Unknown 3/11/09, 6:28 AM

I have to be honest. I am a little hard-headed when it comes to new authors. I've always thought that nothing written nowadays could compare to my most beloved classics but with starting my own blog and all the challenges I signed up for I am warming up to new writers and am pleasantly surprised. There are now quite a few that I am a fan of and can't wait for their next books.
