Featuring . . . I'm Sorry You Feel That Way by Diana Joseph

This Friday and every Friday for the next couple of months, I will be featuring a book that was published under the Amy Einhorn Books imprint. I am starting with the 2009 books and will spotlight them in alphabetical order.

I love the title of Diana Joseph's memoir: I'm Sorry You Feel That Way: The Astonishing but True Story of a Daughter, Sister, Slut, Wife, Mother, and Friend to Man & Dog. Do you have a sense of humor? If so, this collection is for you.

Here's the synopsis (from Powell's)

An Entertainment Weekly must--It's hard to recall another collection of essays, or a memoir, with more natural charm.

Surrounded by dysfunctional men--from her fourteen-year-old son to her high-maintenance boss--Diana Joseph did what she had to do: survive. I'm Sorry You Feel That Way is an honest, hilarious, and instantly recognizable memoir of a truly modern woman. Funny, fearless, and warmhearted, it is a portrait of a woman in all her endless complexities and contradictions, and of the people she has come to love in spite of--or rather because of--theirs.
I've been dipping into this memoir and enjoying Joseph's style and attitude; she tells it like it is:
The boy has still never said he hates me. . . .

I expect he will sooner or later. I'm ready for it. I'm prepared. It won't be a surprise. And when he does, I know what I will say in return:

What the hell do you want from me now?

I'm sorry! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!

I adore you. (p. 107)

For more on Diana Joseph, visit her website, where you can read an excerpt and watch a video of one of her readings.

I'm Sorry You Feel That Way debuted under the Amy Einhorn Books imprint. The paperback edition, however, bears the Berkley imprint.

This book was featured as part of the Amy Einhorn Books Reading Challenge (click to join the fun). For information about the imprint, please read Amy Einhorn's open letter posted here on January 25, 2010.

I probably would never have picked this up, but now that it is part of the Amy Einhorn challenge I'm sure I will at some point. Thanks for the spotlight!

This one sounds like a winner. I'm usually good w/ EW's recommendations.

I remember when EW reviewed this. In fact, I think I have it written down somewhere. To the top of my list it goes!

I forgot about this book -- I saw an interview with the author a long time ago where she had some beautiful things to say about memoirs and I wanted to read this book. Back to the TBR list it goes.
