Here are two that always seem to appear on people's list of favorites. I disliked them both and never even finished the second one.

That's funny...I liked Remains of the Day and loved One Hundred Years of Solitude.
ReplyDeleteThe first is very quiet and subtle...you have to be okay with not much happening. And for Garcia Marquez? Well, it can get weird, and there's magical realism, and not everybody's into that.

One Hundred Years of Solitude is included in my answer today! I've never read Remains of the Day, and wasn't wild about When We Were Orphans.
ReplyDelete100 Years of Solitude is on lots of lists today! I want to read it at some point, but I think I'll leave it for a while.
ReplyDeleteI'm planning to read Remains of the Day soon, I'm not a fan of subtle books, so I have a feeling I won't enjoy it either!
I loved Remains of the Day, but not until I hit the end and everything came together, so I can understand that. I really disliked One Hundred Years of Solitude. In fact I don't really like anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Not sure why, either.

Don't know either one but after reading one book of Garcia I don't think I will touch another book by him.. he scarred me for life :)
ReplyDeleteI started Remains of the Day and couldn't finish it - so that would have probably been a good choice for me too!
ReplyDeleteHere are some that get raves, but I found myself somewhat annoyed...
ReplyDeleteWuthering Heights - although I appreciate the author's ability to make me hate the characters, it was excutiating at times to read.
Twilight Series - loved the first one, the rest left me irritated.
Anything by Nicholas Sparks - maybe he is too commercial, perhaps too sappy...he is very readable but I always feel manipulated when I finish his books.
Both titles leave me cold. I'll continue to pass them up.

ReplyDeleteI haven't been able to read Garcia either, though for me I think I tried Love in the Time of Cholera. The book I picked for today was Never Let Me Go by Ishiguro. So I sympathize with your choice of authors.
ReplyDeleteI loved The Remains of the day, but it is a book that I can see wouldn't be to a lot of people's taste. Marquez I have never got on with.

ReplyDeletemost anything from the new york times book review. i always try to read the top books of the year, but they typically leave me scratching my head, wondering what the heck i'm missing. i'm like to think i'm pretty well read...but pretentious literature makes me crazy. :)

ReplyDeleteMy worst "best" book has to be *Three Cups of Tea*. Great message, but poor writing holds me back from a whole-hearted endorsement of the book.
