In the last month I've gotten into the habit of trading books with friends. I've not yet tried the official book-swapping sites. (If you don't know what a book-swapping site is, check out the series of posts at S. Krishna's Books in which Swapna reviews and compares them.)Anyway, I was stupid enough to think that I would actually give away more books than I brought in. Well, I think I'm ahead of the game, but not by much. Of course, I'm still buying books and I also receive books for review.
Here's a look at some of the books that came in the mail recently.
Let's start with two books I'm particularly looking forward to. Undercover by Beth Kephart, a YA novel, was given to me by a friend and I plan to read it over Thanksgiving weekend. A Nest of Celeste by Henry Cole is a beautiful book that I requested from the publisher. I'm not sure yet if it is YA or middle reader. The Mark by Jen Nadol is a YA novel that has paranormal elements (ARC for review).
I received three finished books and one ARC for review. I'm very excited about all four of these books. Backseat Saints by Joshilyn Jackson, Between Here and April byDeborah Copaken Kogan, The House on Tradd Street by Karen White, and The Girl on Legare Street by Karen White.
I managed to snag three historical fiction ARCs from a friend. The reviews definitely caught my interest. The Wet Nurse's Tale by Erica Eisdorfer, The Tory Widow by Christine Blevins, and Mozart's Sister by Nancy Moser.
Finally, I have three new nonfiction titles: M. F. K. Fisher among the Pots and Pans by Joan Reardon (bought), The Secret Wife of Louis XIV by Veronica Buckley (review), and The Magician's Book by Laura Miller (swapped).

Wow, that is a load of books! There is no sense even trying to end up with a lighter load with this steady stream of fun coming through your mailbox! I really want to read that book Backseat Saints!!!!

ReplyDeleteMozart's sister is REALLY good. if you end up liking that one, Nancy Moser has written several other good historical fiction 1st person novels in teh same style on Jane Austen, Martha Washington and Elizabeth Barrett Browning

ReplyDeleteI got two Danish thrillers in the mail this week, Uglies, Pretties and Specials by Scott Westfield plus Darkness by my friend by John Marsden. I am excited about them all!
I didn't know Joshilyn Jackson had a new book coming out. So yay!

ReplyDeleteI admit that one of the big reasons I haven't joined a swapping site is because I would rather not have a book coming in for every book I give out. I know I wouldn't have to request books in return--but the temptation would be there. As it is, I'm terrible about avoiding the bookstores anyway--which is probably worse.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of trading one on one though. I do that on occasion, but probably not often enough.
I am looking forward to reading The Girl on Legare Street. I enjoyed the author's first book in the series. I hope you will too!
