Thursday Tea: Emma on Film

Today I want to take a look at three film versions of Jane Austen's Emma. I know of at least two other adaptations, but these are the three that I am most familiar with.

I know that the 1996 Hollywood version of Emma with Gwyeneth Paltrow was not everyone's favorite, but I really loved it. I thought it was nicely filmed and easy and fun to watch.

The PBS Masterpiece production had a different feeling altogether. It is definitely worth your time.

And finally there is Clueless. I've seen this modern-day takeoff on the Emma story many, many times. Think about spending an evening with Valley Girl Cher and her high school friends.

The Tea. I'm drinking Stash Tea's English Breakfast Tea, which apparently became popular in England during Queen Victoria's reign. Stash describes it as "a very distinctive, strong, rich tea.. . . This stimulating tea is the perfect morning wake-up drink." I've been drinking the decaf version in the afternoons, which means I've been drinking the opposite tea: the perfect relaxing snack tea?

The Assessment. I am sure that Emma would be drinking tea with breakfast, although I'm not sure she would have been drinking this particular tea. Cher would have gone for a latte.

Have you seen other versions of Austen's Emma? And for those of you getting tired of my Austen movie posts: Only two more, and I will have finished the Everything Austen Challenge.

Thursday Tea is hosted by Anastasia at Birdbrain(ed) Book Blog. Here's how it works: Tell us what tea you are drinking (and if you like it). And then tell us what book are you reading (and if you like it). Finally, tell us if they go together.

Source: Rented (see review policy).
FTC: I buy all teas myself, I am not a tea reviewer.
Challenges: Everything Austen

  4. I don't think I've ever seen the BBC version. I do love Clueless though and I enjoy the Gwyneth Paltrow version.

Can't wait to see a new adaptation.

  6. Have only seen Clueless, but loved it! I went with Pumpkin Spice coffee this morning. Might switch to some tea later. Although I have mango green iced tea in the frig.

  7. I've seen Clueless a thousand times-I love it. I've never been able to watch the entire version of Emma w/Gwenyth Paltrow. My sisters both think I'm crazy for not liking it.

  8. I've watched all the Emma's but somehow I loved Gwyneth Paltrow's take. She brought in so much self-deprecating charm to the role.

  9. Can't for the version as well! I've seen all three, liked them all. I think that I've been exposed to Clueless most as it was a favorite of my daughter when she was younger.

  10. What??? Clueless is based on Emma? I didn't know that. But then I haven't read Emma either :)

I did not like Clueless at all, it was too irritating, may be I should look into the other 2 adaptations.

  11. I have seen all 3 versions but I still adore Clueless. It was so much fun.

I guess there was one more BBC productions but I don't remember that well.

  12. I'm with you - I liked the 1996 Emma a lot as well as Clueless. I haven't seen the Masterpiece Theatre version but I'm sure it's good as they do everything so well.

I like the sound of your English Breakfast tea. We're in Portland, Oregon where it is chilly and usually rainy and I think this would be the perfect place to drink it.

  13. You know what your post just did to me?

It made me stop and say: At three today when this crazy day eases off a smidge, I will drink a cup of hot peach ginger tea.

  14. I'm excited about the new one, too! I liked the Gwyneth version mostly, I admit, because of Jeremy Northam. What a fabulous Knightley. The BBC version was probably more realistic, but I found the Knightley in that one FAR too harsh a character. He wasn't very sympathetic.

    And Clueless... fabulous ;-)

  16. I've seen all of those versions of Emma. I think the Gweneth Paltrow version is probably the best, although for some reason she seems like a strange Emma to me.

  17. Have watched Clueless but not the rest. Gotta check those out!

  19. I love Clueless. I thought it was so cute and clever! I saw the 96 version as well. I do love me so Jeremy Northam.

  20. I've seen the Hollywood version. Loved it! I haven't seen the Masterpiece version, but it looks really good. I'm going to have to check it out. It looks good. I've also seen Clueless many times. It has a certain charm to it, I think.

I haven't seen any other versions of Emma that I can think of though.

Fun Post. Ha! Love the FTC disclaimer for the tea at the end.

  21. I have seen none of the versions you mention. Sad.
I am sure I want to read the book before I see the movie... **ashamed**

  22. I really enjoy the Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow. It's light, funny and very enjoyable. The PBS version is more serious, a bit more accurate and very good. I haven't seen Clueless in years. It's a very cute film, from what I remember and Alicia Silverstone does a great job.
These are the only 3 versions of "Emma" that I've seen.

I haven't had Stash Teas. I like Twinings English Breakfast Tea and Irish Tea and drink them a lot especially in Fall & Winter.

Great post Beth and I'm going to check out Anastasia's blog and Thursday Tea! Thank you.

  24. "Searching for a boy in high school is as useless as searching for meaning in a Pauly Shore movie." I love Cher! And Emma is the only movie with Gwyneth Paltrow in which I don't find her intolerably annoying.

  25. I've only seen Clueless and even that I haven't seen in a while. I just watched the trailer for it and wow...I just don't remember it being SO '90s! So cheesy...so good.

  26. I've not seen the PBS adaptation yet so I may have to give it a try. I did see Emma (one of my favorites that I still watch every now and again when it's on) and I adored Clueless. It was such a fun take on the story. I wonder how many girls it got interested in classic literature :)

  27. You're timing couldn't be better, I'm taking my daughter to a Jane Austen tea and "improv" next month and I was thinking we should watch a few movies of the books we haven't read. Thanks for the leg up!

  28. I think I've actually watch EMMA starring Gywneth in it. I think...

  29. Hey, the Gwyneth Paltrow Emma is one of my favourite movies! I don't think I'll get tired of watching it.

I've also seen Kate Beckinsale's Emma but still preferred G. Paltrow's version. :)

As for Clueless, I'm still looking for the DVD.
