The wind clawed at Claire's face as she trudged through the frozen slush coating the sidewalk. The sky was murky, the faint sun shrouded by writhing pewter clouds. A storm brewed sullenly overhead, but it was too cold for snow. Claire felt the bite despite the long wool overcoat, two sweaters, and yesterday's issue of Le Temps stuffed between each layer of fabric.—From The Last Time I Saw Paris by Lynn Sheene (Penguin USA / Berkley Books, 2011)
Winter had come early and with malice. It was as if Paris closed the door and shut off the lights. Go home, the city told the occupiers. But Nazis weren't the ones freezing in their beds. (p. 57)

I find books set against the WWII setting fascinating, so this sounds like a book I would really enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the teaser!
I'm very interested in the WW II period but have only recently started finding good novels set in Europe in that era. This sounds good, except that "writhing pewter clouds" seems a bit much.
ReplyDeleteLately I've been drawn to stories in this era...and I love this powerful teaser that brings me right into the scene.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing.
Here's MY TT POST
Very evocative quote, thanks for sharing it with us!
ReplyDeleteA great teaser.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great teaser. I've had my eye on this book for a while - I may have to pick up a copy.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds so good. I can't wait to read it.
ReplyDeleteRarely is it that writing is so pretty that I actually WANT to be in gross slush and wind. Signed and sealed, here, though! ;O)
ReplyDeleteI saw this book in Barnes and Noble and it took everything I had (or thinking about my scant bank account) not to buy it. Glad to see you are reading it! Looking forward to your thoughts about it
ReplyDeleteSomeone just reviewed this. Jen? Julie? I can't remember, but it sounded really good. That whole WWII think you know. Excellent teaser.
