
This last week's dinners were lentil soup with spinach, chicken grain bowls, pork stir-fry, and broccoli mac and cheese. Our freezer is full of vegetables, fruits, and meats as well as homemade sauces I made last summer. Our pantry contains flour, beans, rice, dried fruit, oatmeal, and a variety of oils and vinegars.
Even if we work our way through the fresh food in the refrigerator, we'll still have plenty to keep the wolf from the door.
As many of you are, I'm sure, we're watching a ton of news. Last night, though, I needed a break and found Taco Chronicles on Netflix. This is a six-part documentary about different styles of tacos found throughout Mexico. The Netflix original series is in Spanish, but there are English subtitles.
Each episode is only about a half hour and focuses on one region of Mexico and one style of taco. I watched the first two -- "Pastor" and "Carnitas" -- and here are my thoughts.

We're not, however, given recipes or instructions for reproducing the tacos from the featured cooks. Note too that, though we visit a number of taco stands and restaurants in each episode, Taco Chronicles doesn't provide many details for planning your next vacation. The episodes I watched were enjoyable, and I definitely learned something, but I wasn't tempted to immediately binge-watch the rest of the series.
From a filming perspective: To my unprofessional eyes, Taco Chronicles was well edited and nicely filmed. The food shots are lovely, and the people we meet are definitely passionate about their tacos.
Recommendation: If you have some time to kill and a Netflix subscription, give Taco Chronicles a shot. Just go in with the idea that the series is more a celebration of all things taco than it is travel guide, restaurant review, or cooking show.

Another Netflix food series sounds great — they also just released a new season of Ugly Delicious which is one of my topics this week! I’ve read several books about Mexican food in the US (like Taco USA by arellano) — this sounds like a great addition to my knowledge.

We live in Texas, and consequently we are all about all things taco. I will look for this series. It would be fun to try to listen to it in Spanish, with the subtitles off.
ReplyDeleteLove me a taco! I’ve been making Tex mex here lately using up our leftovers wisely. Your first two paragraphs echo what we are doing, trying to use the food wisely as I’m not sure how long we need to stay home. For my hopefully final run into a grocery store I saw all the flour was gone xceot a few bags of almond flour. One single jar of yeast sat on a shelf so I grabbed it.

ReplyDeleteWho doesn't like tacos and there are so many variations. The show sounds interesting.
ReplyDeleteOur store's limited ingredients this week excluded any fresh greens for tacos (usually we use cabbage). So, we'll go with burritos and enchiladas in the coming weeks when we want a taste of the southwest. I'll even have time for homemade tortillas, since losing my commute (working from home) saves over an hour each day.

ReplyDeleteSince we won't be traveling anywhere any time soon, watching the world and it's variety of delicious foods is a good stop gap. I would probably be inspired to make tacos for sure. Good inspiration. Now we need to stock up on tortillas.
ReplyDeleteTacos always sound good to me. I am staying put this weekend as I have still been going into work. Much of our teams are working mostly from home but we managers have been going in. I'm pretty stocked up on food although now it sounds like I might want to look for taco shells. ;-) Take care everyone.
