Friday Finds: Jan. 9

I post all my weekly discoveries on Sundays, but I like to highlight one or two books for this meme. For other Friday Finds, please click on over to Should Be Reading.

I found The Tenth Gift by Jane Johnson in AudioFile magazine. Here is part of the publisher's summary:

Julia Lovat receives a gift that will change her life. It appears to be a book of exquisite 17th-century embroidery patterns--but on closer examination, Julia finds it also contains faint diary entries. In these, Cat Tregenna, an embroideress, tells how she and others were stolen out of a Cornish church in 1625 by Muslim pirates and taken on a brutal voyage to Morocco to be auctioned off as slaves. Captivated by this dramatic discovery, Julia sets off to North Africa to determine the authenticity of the book and to uncover more of Cat's story. There, in the company of a charismatic Moroccan guide, amid the sultry heat, the spice markets, and exotic ruins, Julia discovers buried secrets.

It's interesting that you found such a great sounding book in a magazine called AudioFile. I guess they were reviewing the audio book.

AudioFile is devoted to audiobooks. I discovered the magazine about three years ago. They have a website where you can read reviews online. I like getting the magazine in print.

What an amazing sounding book...intrigue with some fact that I would be sure to learn something from. I'm also very interested in this magazine (even though my audio life will be nothing but Outlander series for a big chunk of 2009!). Sounds like a good item to put on my birthday wish list!

I'm so excited about this book, that I've already bought it on audio. The description really grabbed me; and I do love the cover. Sandy, it's a great magazine; their website is worth checking out [I have no affiliation, etc.]

It sounds very adventurous, I'll watch for your review/comments on it.

The Tenth Gift is a book I'd like to listen to. I've just spent the last half hour on the AudioFile website. What a fantastic resource the magazine must be for audiobook lovers. Thanks for sharing that information.

That sounds really good. I have unintentionally been on a historical fiction kick lately, or maybe I am just discovering how much of it I actually read.

Margot: You're welcome. I look forward to every issue.

Nicole: I go through reading phases, too.
