Today's Read: Battle Royal by Koushun Takami

Okay, so the day starts out, and I'm riding in a bus down a Japanese highway with 41 other kids from my class. We're on some dumb study trip for middle schoolers. I was kind of looking around at my classmates when I noticed that almost everyone was asleep. Huh? And when I started to get sleepy too, I wondered if something was wrong. I woke up in a strange classroom with a silver collar around my neck--then I knew something was wrong. It turns out we had the dumb luck of being picked to be in the Program, a fight to the death in which only one can survive.

MizB at Should Be Reading hosts Teaser Tuesdays. Here's how it works: Grab your current read; let the book fall open to a random page; and share 2 “teaser” sentences from that page. For more teasers, click on through to MizB's blog.

I think you all know how this works. The rules are simple. All you have to do is kill each other. There are no violations. And . . . the last remaining survivor can go home. You even get a nice card autographed by the Dictator. Isn't that wonderful? (p. 42)

How is this one going for you?

I remember C.B. James talking about this one, and comparing it to a much more brutal Hunger Games. In fact he preferred this book over HG. I've had the book brewing on my back burner since he said that. I will wait to see if you think it is worth it.

Oh - and it will do nicely as an Asian book for the 2010 Global Reading Challenge!

Sounds like another brutal book is up for you. I am looking for an Asian book but I don't think this will do.

I can't wait for your review of this. I kept thinking of it when I read The Hunger Games, but i haven't actually read BR.

Wow, I watched the movie version of this a few years ago, and it was pretty gruesome. I can't imagine what the book will be like.

Also, hi! This is my first time posting on your blog, but I really enjoy your content!

Nise' is right. It does sound a little like HUNGER GAMES.
